Xbox App Launch Delayed by Legal Issues

Microsoft’s Xbox app launch is delayed due to legal issues, affecting direct game purchases on Android.

Microsoft’s Xbox App Delayed: Legal Hurdles Prevent Direct Game Purchases

Microsoft’s plans to launch a standalone Xbox app on Android have encountered an issue. The app would allow users to directly purchase and play games, bypassing the Google Play Store. These plans have been temporarily halted due to legal challenges.

Xbox President Sarah Bond posted recently on Bluesky. She explained that the company had intended to introduce this feature in the U.S. market. They planned to leverage a court order that directed Google to open up the Play Store. However, a temporary administrative stay has put these plans on hold.

“Our team has built the functionality. It is ready to go live. This will happen as soon as the court makes a final decision,” Bond stated.

Microsoft’s vision for the Xbox app is to provide gamers with greater flexibility and choice. The company aims to streamline the gaming experience by allowing direct purchases and downloads. This approach reduces reliance on third-party app stores.

The outcome of the legal battle will determine the future of Microsoft’s Xbox app. It will also have a potential impact on the mobile gaming landscape.
