OpenAI Shifts Focus to Unified GPT-5 Model, Scraps Standalone o3 Release
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a significant update to its artificial intelligence roadmap. The company will not release the o3 AI model as a standalone product. Instead, the capabilities of o3 will be integrated into the upcoming GPT-5 model, marking a strategic shift towards unified intelligence.
GPT-4.5: A Stepping Stone to GPT-5
Before the release of GPT-5, OpenAI plans to launch GPT-4.5, internally codenamed Orion. This model is expected to arrive in the next few weeks. It may take a few months. It will be the company’s last non-chain-of-thought (non-CoT) model. GPT-4.5 will reportedly offer improved performance, although the exact specifications have not been disclosed.
Unified Intelligence with GPT-5
The GPT-5 model aims to provide users with a seamless AI experience by integrating various OpenAI tools and capabilities. This unified intelligence approach will allow the model to understand when to use reasoning. It will also know when not to use reasoning. This eliminates the need for users to choose between different models for specific tasks.
Tier-Based Access to GPT-5
OpenAI will introduce a three-tier system for access to GPT-5. Free users will get unlimited chat access at the standard intelligence setting. Paid subscribers will have access to higher levels of intelligence. The company will also implement safeguards to prevent abuse and misuse of the model.
