EU Compliance: Microsoft Updates for Windows 10 & 11

Microsoft updates Windows 10 and 11 for EU users, enhancing browser choice and app management options.

Microsoft Introduces Changes to Windows 10 and Windows 11 for EU Users

Microsoft is making changes to Windows 10 and Windows 11 to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Users in the European Economic Area (EEA) will benefit from the update.
They can now opt out of prompts to switch to Microsoft Edge.
Users can also uninstall the Microsoft Store app while still receiving updates for installed apps.

New Features for EU Users

Users in the EEA can set third-party browsers as default apps for more file types.
They can set defaults for file types like .htm, .html, and .xml.
The default browser app’s icon will be pinned to the taskbar.
Browsers can also be set as default apps for PDF files.

Changes to Microsoft Edge and Search

Microsoft Edge will no longer nag users to set it as default browser.
Users who uninstall the browser won’t be prompted to reinstall it. This only changes if they have installed third-party progressive web apps from the Microsoft Store.
Users can now see search results from various search engines and disable or reorder search providers.

Uninstalling Microsoft Store

Windows 10 and Windows 11 users in the EEA can uninstall the Microsoft Store from the Start Menu. They can also do it from the Settings app.
Existing apps will continue to receive updates even after uninstalling the store.
Users can download and reinstall the Microsoft Store.

These changes offer EU users more choice and flexibility with their Windows operating system.
