Google is rolling out Gemini support to more navigation modes in Google Maps. The company announced the expansion on Thursday. Now walkers and cyclists can enjoy hands-free AI assistance. Previously, Gemini worked only for four-wheelers and two-wheelers.
This update builds on the November launch. Back then, Google first introduced Gemini in Maps navigation. Today, the feature reaches walking and cycling routes worldwide. Android and iOS users gain access immediately.
To activate Gemini, open Google Maps first. Set your destination and start navigation in a supported mode. Then tap the microphone icon at the top. Alternatively, simply say “Hey Google” to wake the assistant.
Gemini operates purely as a voice assistant. Users cannot type questions yet. Responses appear only as spoken answers and visual cues on screen.
While walking, ask useful questions freely. For example, say “What neighbourhood am I in?” Gemini replies instantly and highlights the area. Or try “What are the top-rated restaurants nearby?” The AI shows recommendations clearly with pins and ratings.
Cyclists benefit too. Ask about your expected time of arrival. Gemini calculates ETA accurately and speaks it aloud. Moreover, handle tasks beyond navigation. Say “When’s my next meeting?” The assistant checks your calendar and responds.
Send messages hands-free as well. Command “Text Richa, I’ll come home in 30 minutes.” Gemini composes and sends the message instantly. You keep both hands on the handlebars safely.
Additionally, follow-up questions work seamlessly. Ask about places along your route. Find nearby EV charging stations quickly. Share your ETA with friends effortlessly.
Google continues to make Maps smarter. Hands-free assistance keeps users focused and safe. Walking, cycling, driving—all modes now feel more intelligent. The future of navigation looks conversational and convenient.
