Google is developing a new notification feature called Pixel Glow. This feature will help users stay informed even when their phone lies face down.
Pixel Glow Spotted in Android 17 Beta
Recent reports show that Google included hints about Pixel Glow in the Android 17 Beta 4 APK teardown. The feature was earlier known by the code name “orbit.” It also appeared under the name “Light animations” in previous versions.
According to the description found in the code, Pixel Glow uses subtle light and colour on the back of the device. It alerts users about important notifications and calls without ringing loudly. This allows people to stay in the moment while still receiving updates.
The feature will rely on special hardware. Code references clearly state that the device must have dedicated hardware lights. Therefore, Google is likely to add RGB LEDs to its upcoming Pixel phones. These lights will create gentle lighting effects for notifications.
Moreover, Gemini AI will play a major role in Pixel Glow. The smart assistant may control lighting patterns and interactions with users.
How Pixel Glow Differs from Existing Features
Google already offers Flash Notifications in Android 14. That feature uses the screen and camera LED to flash alerts. However, Pixel Glow will work differently. It will light up the back of the phone with soft colours when the device is placed face down. This creates a more elegant and less distracting experience.
Expected Launch with Pixel 11 Series
Industry experts believe Pixel Glow will debut with the Pixel 11 series. Google plans to launch the Pixel 11 phones in August this year. The standard Pixel 11 model is expected to come with a 6.3-inch LTPO AMOLED display, the new Tensor G6 processor, and a MediaTek M90 modem.
Early design renders of the Pixel 11 do not yet show visible lighting elements. Still, the software code strongly suggests that Google will introduce RGB lighting hardware in the new devices.
Benefits of the New Feature
Pixel Glow will give users a calm and modern way to receive alerts. Instead of loud ringtones or bright screen flashes, the phone will glow softly from the back. This design helps users stay focused during meetings, sleep, or quiet moments while never missing important calls or messages.
Google continues to improve the Pixel experience with smart and useful features. Pixel Glow represents the company’s focus on both hardware innovation and thoughtful software design.
The feature is still under development. More details are expected closer to the official launch of the Pixel 11 series later this year.
