Apple’s AI Strategy Targets Everyday Users, Not Superintelligence

Apple is shaping its artificial intelligence to help ordinary people in daily life rather than chasing superintelligence. Senior executives recently outlined this approach and expressed confidence despite rising competition.

In a recent interview with TIME, Apple CEO John Ternus and Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak discussed the company’s AI plans. Joswiak said Apple is not building products mainly for die-hard AI believers who pursue superintelligence. “We love them, and they can use it too, but that’s not our target,” he said. “It’s how to make it better for everyday people.”

Joswiak also addressed hardware ambitions from rivals such as OpenAI. He stated that Apple does not feel threatened. The company differentiates itself through tight integration of devices, operating systems, and services. “The fact that we can do the integration that we can means we can create just a better experience than anybody else,” he added.

Amid a broader public backlash against AI hype, Apple executives say they are building a more modest form of the technology. Their version aims to be personalised and privacy-preserving so it can genuinely assist ordinary users. Joswiak contrasted this with what he called Silicon Valley’s “lunatic fringe.”

Meanwhile, talent movement and legal disputes continue between the two companies. Several senior designers have left Apple for OpenAI in recent months. Earlier this year, Apple sued OpenAI, alleging the ChatGPT maker conspired to steal trade secrets to accelerate its own hardware plans. OpenAI responded with a court filing that accused Apple of copying more than 100 confidential files related to unreleased OpenAI devices.

Overall, Apple is positioning its AI efforts around practical daily use, strong ecosystem integration, and privacy rather than aggressive superintelligence goals.
