Sony Will Proceed With Ending PlayStation Disc Production
Sony plans to end disc production for new PlayStation games. The change begins in January 2028. The company faces strong backlash from players, industry figures, and game preservationists. Despite the criticism, Sony will move forward carefully with the decision.
The Japanese firm shared its first-quarter FY 2026 results on Friday. Sales stayed steady. Operating income for the Games and Network Services business rose 37 percent from the previous year.
During the earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao addressed the disc decision. He confirmed that Sony will not reverse course. The company instead focuses on building a full digital ecosystem.
Tao explained the main reason for the change. Digitalization of content continues across the industry. This trend affects more than just PlayStation games. After careful review, Sony decided to proceed. Officials say they will advance the plan with caution.
Players have voiced strong opposition. Many share emotional connections to physical games and the memories they create. Tao acknowledged these views. He said the company understands the concerns. Sony intends to explore better ways to engage gamers in its future digital ecosystem.
The firm will stop producing discs for new titles starting in January 2028. It will continue making discs for older games. In response, users launched a Change.org petition called “Don’t Kill the Disc.” The petition has gathered more than 350,000 signatures.
A boycott called PlayStation Blackout is also underway. Organized by the game preservation group DoesItPlay?, the effort urges fans to avoid using their PlayStation consoles for one week. The boycott runs from August 23 to August 30.
