Microsoft Releases Windows 11 2026 Update, Version 26H2
Microsoft has released the Windows 11 2026 Update, also called version 26H2. Eligible PCs on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 can install it now. The release changes File Explorer, the Start menu, and the taskbar. It also adds security fixes and accessibility upgrades. Microsoft says the update can cut the number of restarts needed to stay current.
The company announced 26H2 in a blog post. It is the next annual feature update for Windows 11. Microsoft says it shares the same servicing base as versions 25H2 and 24H2.
File Explorer gains AI-powered actions. Users can edit supported images or summarise documents stored on OneDrive and SharePoint through Microsoft Copilot without opening the files. That feature needs an active Microsoft 365 subscription and a Copilot licence. Work and school accounts can also use quick actions such as Open file location and Ask Copilot.
Archive support expands as well. File Explorer can now open uu, cpio, xar, and nupkg files. Voice typing is also available when renaming files.
The Start menu is redesigned. A scrollable All apps section adds Category and Grid views. The layout can adapt to different screen sizes. Users can set the menu size and show or hide the Pinned, Recent, and All sections separately.
The taskbar can now sit on the top, bottom, left, or right edge of the display. A smaller taskbar option is included. Microsoft also added a way to monitor AI agents from the taskbar. Researcher in Microsoft Copilot is the first supported experience.
Windows Search is improved. Users can preview results without opening the item. Microsoft says results are clearer, and Windows can automatically index frequently used folders.
Recovery tools are new as well. Point-in-time PC rollbacks and Quick Machine Recovery scans are included. Copilot+ PCs also gain natural-language voice commands and Voice Isolation.
Windows Update handling has changed. Version 26H2 can install eligible updates together with the monthly security update when possible. Individual updates remain under Settings, then Windows Update, then Available updates.
